Beakus were asked by fimmaker Mike Paterson to create three unique videos for the National Maritime Museum's 'Old Weather' project. The aim is to promote the campaign to crowdsource volunteers to transcribe the weather recordings in hundreds of old ship's log books. The data will feed in and augment existing data of weather patterns through the ages, helping to build up a more reliable forecast for times ahead.

The three films we created are 'Crowdsourcing', 'Sea Observations' (seen here), and 'Weather Reconstructions'. We used a variety of styles and techniques from pared-back motion graphics to 3D CGI and motion-tracking.

In this movie we explain why measurements taken at sea are so useful in developing weather patterns across the globe and on land. Using a mix of 3D and 2D animation the info-graphics clearly illustrate our interviewees message.

We have been working hard on two new installments of time-travelling Eric's animation series for the BBC 'Day In The Life'. The first, 'Victorians', is online at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/handsonhistory/victorians.shtml

This is the fifth episode, and Eric is joined by his younger sister Mona in travelling back to the Victorian Workhouse where the intrepid duo are put to work in the mills, down the pits and up the chimneys… It's a rough old life, and the food's appalling. Still, they get out of it alive and learn plenty on the way. Go see the animation on the BBC's site, or below, if you're click-lazy.

For the past couple of months director Leo Bridle has been creating a series of nine 40-second animations for the British Library. A major new portal on their website, 'Playtimes: A Century of Children's Games and Rhymes', launched a few days back by Michael Rosen, aims to preserve children’s games and songs as an important aspect of our national culture and explore how they continue to be a part of the lives of children living in the age of computer games and the internet. Leo's animations form the backbone to the new web portal, illustrating all the different types of games children play. Below we present a fun edit!

Leo held workshops at two schools, in London and Sheffield, to brainstorm the content for the nine films, and create the artwork and soundtracks. Back in the studio we animated the kids drawings to bring their stories to life over a ten week period. Below we feature a selection of artwork created by the kids. To watch the nine films in full, visit http://www.bl.uk/learning/langlit/playground/kidszone.html.

The three films we created are 'Crowdsourcing' (seen here), 'Sea Observations' and 'Weather Reconstructions'. We used a variety of styles and techniques from pared-back motion graphics to 3D CGI and motion-tracking.

In this movie we explain why many hands make much, much lighter work. In fact, we work out that it would take 28 years for one person to transcribe all the log-books… So maybe the National Maritime Museum needs your help? Designed and rendered in a mix of 3D and 2D, but always with a clean info-graphic style, the film clearly conveys the message.

The aim is to promote the campaign to crowdsource volunteers to transcribe the weather recordings in hundreds of old ship's log books. The data will feed in and augment existing data of weather patterns through the ages, helping to build up a more reliable forecast for times ahead.

The three films we created are 'Crowdsourcing', 'Sea Observations', and 'Weather Reconstructions' (seen here). We used a variety of styles and techniques from pared-back motion graphics to 3D CGI and motion-tracking.

In this movie we explain why old weather readings are so useful for reconstructing weather patterns around the globe, and therefore helping us to predict extreme weather in the future. Director Steve Smith worked with 3D modeller Darragh Mason on all the elements that would be placed upon a live-action globe set in the offices of the scientist being interviewed by Mike Paterson. The footage was tracked, graded and the elements (including old boats, weather patterns, and the odd cloud) placed upon it.

This is the second in our series about Eric, a 10-year-old animated boy who can travel back in time. 'Day In The Life' was created to accompany a major new BBC series ‘Hands On History’ that encourages kids to find out more about historical periods through the BBC’s website. The first episode, ‘The Normans’ can be seen at www.beakus.com/blog/day-in-the-life.

'Evacuee' sees Eric leave his London home to lodge in the countryside. Here he has a busy time helping everyone out, coping with rationing, and looking for scrap metal. An exciting dog-fight gives Eric the opportunity to win a coveted spitfire…

Eric is voiced by the talented Daniel Roche, from ‘Outnumbered’, whose idiosyncratic delivery helped to develop Eric’s character.

Starring Eric, a 10-year-old animated boy who can travel back in time, ‘Day In The Life’ was created to accompany a major new BBC series ‘Hands On History’. This is in fact the first of a series of tales that will encourage kids to find out more about historical periods through the BBC’s website. The first episode, ‘The Normans’, was directed by Dave Hodgson at Pesky, and animated and designed by Beakus director Steve Smith.

As a Norman boy Eric drinks beer for breakfast and poos in the castle moat… He then juggles an array of fighting implements before serving wine at a banquet.

Eric is voiced by the talented Daniel Roche, from ‘Outnumbered’, whose idiosyncratic delivery helped to develop Eric’s character.
